What is Your Life Built On?

My family and I recently had the opportunity to stay in a cabin in the mountains of Pigeon Forge, TN. While outside of our cabin I noticed the cabins to the left and right of us. I saw that the foundations of the cabins were built on a large slab of cement blocks. The cabins’ foundation reminded me of the parable of the wise and the foolish builders found in Matthew 7:24-27.

Matthew 7:24-27

Jesus proclaimed, “24 “Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock.

25 And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock.

26 And everyone who hears these words of mine and does not do them will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand.

27 And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell, and great was the fall of it.”

In the parable Jesus invites us to evaluate and consider the foundation on which we have built our lives. Our lives are a sum total of our decisions, God’s grace, mercy and sovereignty. Are we basing our decisions on the rock of God’s word and his Holy spirit or on the sands of the world and our ever-changing emotions?

If we find ourselves making decisions and emoting based on our current sensory input and or the input from the world we can end up making decisions that lead us unto paths we do not want to be on. We will also find that making decisions based on our unstable emotions result in an unstable life. Jesus teaches us that if we make the decision to take heed to his words and live them out we will be like the wise builder whose house was built on the rock. The house built on the rock could withstand the harsh elements. If we choose to build a life on the rock of Christ he will  empower us to withstand and even flourish during turbulent times.

Is your life in alignment with God’s word and direction?

What is your life’s mission?

Is your life’s mission in alignment with God’s purpose for your life?

How can your life serve as a light in this world?
